Game 1, Municipal Stadium in Kansas City:  A game where the Tigers are the HEAVY favorites, turned out to be the most exciting game of the tournament to date.  Denny McLain would pitch brilliantly for the Tigers, giving up just 2 hits thru the first 10 innings and striking out 16 (he had 14 K’s thru 9).  Meanwhile, Kansas City hurler, Wally Bunker, matched zero for zero on the scoreboard, giving up just 3 hits in his 11 inning CG victory over McLain and the Tigers.  Mickey Stanley (2 hits) and McLain (1 hit) had the only base-hits for Detroit (all singles).  In the bottom of the 11th, Pat Kelly drew a lead-off walk for KC.  Ed Kirkpatrick flew out to LF.  1 out.  Mike Fiore singled, moving Kelly to 2nd.  Lou Piniella grounded out 5-3, moving the runners up to 2nd and 3rd.  2 outs.  Joe Foy provided the game winning hit, s single to RF, scoring Kelly from 3rd, and it is pandemonium at Muncipal Field in KC … Final score: Royals 1, Tigers 0 in 11 innings.  The Royals lead the series, 1 game to 0.

Game 2, Tiger Stadium in Detroit:  The Tigers are on the home diamond, facing elimination vs the expansion Royals.  KC gets off to a fast start on a 2-run double by Joe Foy in the top of the 1st (Foy had the game winning hit in game 1).  Detroit counters with a solo-homer by Jim Northrup in the bottom of the 1st, the Tigers first tally of the series.  It would be their only run scored in 2 games.  Roger Nelson is the story of this game, pitching another gem as he did in the preliminary round vs the Angels.  In the top of the 7th, with KC leading 2-1, Ed Kirkpatrick and Mike Fiore go back-to-back with solo homers, putting KC in front 4-1.  KC adds another run in the top of the 8th.  Moe Drabowsky relieves Nelson with no outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the 8th, and pitches out of the jam, along with a scoreless 9th.  Final Score:  Kansas City 5, Detroit 1.  With a 2-0 series win, the #9 Kansas City Royals (4-0 overall) will advance to the AL Semifinals vs the #1 AL seed, the Baltimore Orioles.  The Detroit Tigers (0-2) are eliminated.
