QUARTERFINALS (Best of Three)

SERIES #9

Series #9 opens the AL Quarterfinals.  The #1 Baltimore Orioles (109-53) vs the upstart #11 Seattle Pilots (64-98).

Game 1:  Baltimore (Cuellar AYZ, 0-0) at Seattle (Gelnar CYZ, 1-0)

The Seattle Pilots and John Gelnar made this game interesting for the first 4 innings.  Thanks to a Wayne Comer solo-HR in the bottom of the 4th, and Gelnar pitching 4 shutout innings, the Pilots actually led this game 1-0 thru 4.  Gelnar’s shutout inning streak came to an end at 13, as he gave up 4 runs in the top of the 5th as Baltimore used a walk and 4 singles to spell the end of Gelnar’s day.  Baltimore added 2 more in the 6th, and 2 more in the top of the 9th on a 2-run homer by Davey Johnson.  Seattle did add 2 runs in the bottom of the 9th on a 2-run homer by Don Mincher.  Final score: Orioles 8, Pilots 3.  The Orioles lead the series, 1 game to 0.

Game 2:  Seattle (Brabender DY, 1-0) at Baltimore (McNally BYZ, 0-0)

Game 2 in Baltimore,  Seattle wasted no time in making a serious run at forcing a game 3.  Seattle scored 2 in the 1st and 2 in the 2nd, leading 4-0 heading into the bottom of the 2nd.  Baltimore made a dent, getting on the board, 4-1 after 2.  Gene Brabender pitched as if his life depended on it for 4 more innings, he kept it a 4-1 Seattle lead.  However, in the bottom of the 6th, Mark Belanger led off with a solo HR.  Brabender was removed for Diego Segui.  Orioles pinch-hitter Dave May reach on an error.  Don Buford singled and stole 2nd.  Paul Blair grounded out, but drove in the Orioles 3rd run, with May scoring from 3rd.  Frank Robinson singled home Buford for the tying run.  Boog Powell clobbered one deep to left, to put the Orioles out in front, a 2-run HR.  The Orioles now led 6-4.  Seattle failed to score since the 2nd inning, and Eddie Watt gains the save in the 9th.  Final Score:  Baltimore 6, Seattle 4.  With a 2-0 series win, the #1 Baltimore Orioles will advance to the AL Semifinals.  The Seattle Pilots have been eliminated.
