The Cardinals gave their starting pitcher, Bob Gibson a nice early cushion to work with, as St. Louis led 4-1 after 2.  Gibson pitches a CG 4-hitter, giving up the 1 run on a 2nd inning solo-homer by Deron Johnson.  Final score: Cardinals 6, Phillies 1.  The Cardinals lead the series, 1 game to 0.

jackson_grant_1969_topps  VS  carlton_steve_1969_topps

Game 2 in St. Louis, turned into a pitchers dual with the Cardinals holding a 1-0 lead thru 5.  Steve Carlton had held Philly hitless thru the first 4 innings.  The Phillies found 2 singles in the top of the 5th, but failed to score.  In the top of the 6th, Tony Taylor led off for the Phillies.  He had hit 3 HR all season.  He finally got Philadelphia on the board with a solo-homer.  Later in the inning with 2 outs, Johnny Callison and Deron Johnson hit back-to-back doubles, putting Philly on top, 2-1.  In the top of the 6th, this time with 2 outs, Taylor does it again!  He goes deep for his 2nd homer of the game.  John Briggs made it back-to-back homers with his own solo-shot.  That would be all the scoring Philadelphia would need.  St. Louis put 1 run across in the bottom of the 8th on a Vada Pinson triple, and a Joe Torre sac-fly, but it was too little, too late.  The final score:  Philadelphia 4, St. Louis 2.  The series is tied, 1-1.

St. Louis wins the series, 2 games to 1. Philadelphia is eliminated.

The Phillies jumped out in front in the top of the 1st with 2 runs on 4 singles.  St. Louis had the game tied up 2-2 when Julian Javier singled home Joe Torre from 3rd in the bottom of the 5th.  A 2-2 game heading into the bottom of the 8th, Vada Pinson drove in Lou Brock from 2nd with the go-ahead run.  Cardinal’s reliever, Joe Hoerner, managed to K all 6 batters he faced in the 8th and 9th innings for St. Louis, earning the win.  Final Score:  St. Louis 3, Philadelphia 2.  With a 2-1 series win, the #7 St. Louis Cardinals will advance to play the #2 Atlanta Braves in the NL Quarterfinals.

The co-MVP’s of the series are Bob Gibson:  9 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 7 SO, 1 CG.
