PRELIMINARY ROUND (Best of Three)
SERIES #5
Series #5 of my 1969 APBA MLB tournament has the #5 Cincinnati Reds (89-73) vs the #12 expansion San Diego Padres (52-110).
This series is the first of 4 NL preliminary rounds series.
Game 1: Cincinnati (Maloney BY, 0-0) at San Diego (Niekro CZ, 0-0)
VS
With Cincy paying visit to SD, it did not take long for the Reds to start showing off their power. The Reds scored 3 in the first, with the help of a 2-run homer by Lee May. In the 2nd it was Alex Johnson hitting a 3-run bomb, putting the Reds up 6-0, and knocking out Padre starter, Joe Niekro. San Diego’s Al Ferrera hit a solo-HR in the bottom of the 2nd, 6-1 Reds lead. Bobby Tolan and Johnny Bench would add homers as the Reds route the Padres. Final score: Reds 12, Padres 5. The Reds lead the series, 1 game to 0.

Game 2: San Diego (Kirby C, 0-0) at Cincinnati (Merritt CYZ, 0-0)
VS
Game 2 in Cincinnati, played out completely different than Game 1. Each team traded runs in the 2nd inning. Cincinnati had lost Johnny Bench (5 for 6 in the series) for the remainder of the game due to a 4th inning injury. The score remained 1-1 until the top of the 9th. San Diego put up 2 runs, giving them a great chance to force a decisive game 3. But in the bottom of the 9th, with a run already across to make it a 3-2 game, 2 on and 2 outs, pinch-hitter Jim Stewart connected for a 3-run homer, as Crosley Field erupts in jubilation and a sigh of relief. The final score: Cincinnati 5, San Diego 3. Cincinnati wins the series, 2 games to none. The Reds have earned themselves a NL Quarterfinal match-up vs the #4 NL seed, the San Francisco Giants.

The Pods put up more of a fight than I thought they would, and even played errorless ball in the second game. But what a stirring rally for the Reds! The future looks dicey for them further on, though, because who pitches after Maloney and Merritt? They only have Larry, Curly, and Moe.
