APBAlone Project – 1969 Tourney Update: (#5) Red Sox take down (#12) Indians

AMERICAN LEAGUE

PRELIMINARY ROUND (Best of Three)

SERIES #1

The opening series of my 1969 APBA MLB tournament has the #5 Boston Red Sox (87-75) vs the #12 Cleveland Indians (62-99).

The best-of-three series format for the Preliminary Round (as well as the league Quarterfinals and Semifinals) means an increased chance of seeing early round upsets.  This first series came very close to seeing one of those upsets.

Game 1:  Boston (Nagy BW, 0-0) at Cleveland (McDowell BX, 0-0)

nagy_mike_1970_topps  VS  mcdowell_sam_1969_topps

The series opener is a pitcher’s duel, as Boston uses 3 pitchers to best Cleveland starter, Sam McDowell who pitches a CG loss for the Indians.  Vicente Romo gains the win for Boston, pitching 2 scoreless innings, while Carl Yastrzemski hits his 2nd solo homer of the game, giving Boston a 2-1 lead.  Yaz had tied the game with his 1st homer in the top of the 6th.  Cleveland’s lone run scored in the bottom of the 4th when Ken Harrelson tripled home Tony Horton from 1st.  Sparky Lyle saves the game for Boston by pitching a scoreless 9th, leaving 2 runners on base.  Boston takes the series lead, 1-0.
