TCABT-V: Team Selection

team_selection

As our Neil Ess Memorial Twin Cities APBA Baseball Tournament has grown, one thing that happens to help pass the time in the 6-months between each of our events, is the beginning of the “team selection” period.  We typically set the team selection period to begin around 3 months prior to the actual tourney date.  TCABT-V is scheduled for Saturday, April 2nd, 2016. Our team selection begin date was Saturday, January 2nd, 2016.

The “entrants” email in their top 3 to 5 teams which they would like to select for the tourney, ranked 1 thru 5.  Typically, the earliest emails arrive just past midnight on the begin date of team selection.  The guideline tends to be, if you want to make sure you get your team, your #1 choice, send in that email soon after midnight on the 1st day of the team selection period.  This past Saturday, Gary Borthwick’s email arrived first, at 12:00am, quickly followed by Kevin Cluff’s email at 12:01am.  At 12:03am, Craig Christian’s email had arrived.  2-time defending champ Leroy Arnoldi’s email arrived by 12:06am.  Fred Johnson noted that a mid-slumber bathroom break at 12:54am prompted him to get his selection in.  By 1:21am, 8 email selections had already arrived, none selecting the same team as their #1 choice.  I was indecisive, and I ended up waiting until selection #16 at 9:23am to select the 1920 New York Yankees.  Still, many others will let a few weeks go by before getting their selection in.  In only our 2nd full day of team selection, we currently have 19 teams selected.  There are several tournament regulars who have yet to make their selection.  And team selection does not end until Saturday, March 19th, so there really is no rush, unless you are concerned your team might get selected.  There is a shared anxious excitement for April 2nd to get here soon, along with some warm Spring weather, as the Spring TCABT tourney day means baseball season has arrived.  It is a nice way to space out the time between our 2 tournaments, held in April and October each year.

The amount of “homework” which goes into selecting a tourney team varies.  Some guys roll many games using various teams during those “off months” to give them an idea of who might be more tournament worthy.  Rob Skogen, who happened to select the 1968 Cardinals, saw those Cardinals win his 8-team 60’s league, a 30 game season, deciding the 19-11 Cardinals record was enough to make them tourney worthy.  I think he made a good pick.  Some might just look at the cards, figuring out which team has the most powers numbers, and best pitching options, and go from there.  Another prevailing method is going with a team who you might not think has a chance to win, but will be fun to manage, and hoping to get lucky with.  In TCABT-IV, I had the 1963 Twins, who did not win many tourney games, but they were in most of the games, and were selected due to being a sentimental favorite of mine.

Here are those TCABT-V team selections (along with entrant name and hometown).  I will continue to keep this list up-to-date on the fly as the teams continue to be selected.  We have a “hard” limit of 32 teams.  Hopefully we at least come close to that number.  In the meantime, it is a baseball lover’s dream to spend the winter thinking about which of the following teams might rise to the occasion, and capture a TCABT title …

(Wearing the double-billed Yankee ball cap across from tourney host, Darrell Skogen, is 2-time champ, Leroy Arnoldi rolling for his 1937 Yankees … he has made the 1961 Yankees his TCABT-V tourney team, meaning the double-billed cap will be worn again while he exclaims “BANG goes the DYNAMITE” after each homer his ’61 Yankees hit)
