With play moving to Cleveland Stadium, the Indians facing the possibility of trailing 3 games to none, started early, scoring a run in each the 1st and 2nd inning of game 3.  Detroit got on the board in the top of the 3rd, on a solo homer by Bill Freehan.  This would be the only run Cleveland starter Dick Bosman would allow. Charlie Spikes added a 2-run triple in the bottom of the 8th as Cleveland coasted to a 5-1 win over Detroit in game 3.

Cleveland built a 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of the 4th when Detroit rallied for 2 runs.  Detroit took the lead in the bottom of the 7th when Norm Cash singled home 2 more runs.  In the bottom of the 8th, Detroit pinch-hitter Tony Taylor homered to make it a 5-3 game.  In the top of the 9th, a Jack Brohamer double, scored Walt Williams, pulling Cleveland to within 1 run.  Detroit closer, John Hiller closed out Cleveland, earning a 2 inning save.  Detroit takes a 2-0 series lead heading to Cleveland for game 3.

Mickey Lolich twirls a complete game shut-out, putting Detroit up 1-0 in the best-of-seven series.  Aurelio Rodriguez drove in the go-ahead run with a sac-fly in the bottom of the 2nd.  Al Kaline homered in the bottom of the 5th, to make it 2-0.
